Surgery

The Animal Clinic of North Topeka’s veterinary surgical team has many years of experience and advanced training and will provide safe surgical procedures for your dog or cat.

Ensuring Safe and Comfortable Procedures for Your Pet

We carefully screen your pet prior to surgery to be sure that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. We determine the pain management techniques that are appropriate for your pet’s age, breed, and current health status prior to surgery to provide a comfortable and quick recovery. To lessen the side effects of anesthesia, we provide an anti-nausea injection to help your pet recover faster and return to normal appetite sooner.

We provide the same level of patient monitoring that you would receive if you were having surgery. All pets undergoing surgery at the Animal Clinic of North Topeka are carefully monitored by a trained veterinary technician. Their heart rate and rhythm, respiratory rate, temperature, and blood oxygen levels are all monitored by advanced equipment.

Pain Management

At Animal Clinic of North Topeka, we believe in maximizing the comfort of your pet during and after their surgical procedure. Proper pain management improves your pet’s recovery and improves the healing process. We use a multi-modal approach to pain management, which is a layered administration of small amounts of different medications to minimize the pain your pet might feel during or after the procedure. Because we administer lower doses of each individual medication, your pet will experience fewer adverse side effects, more complete pain relief, and faster post-operative recovery.

Pre-Anesthetic Blood testing

We recommend performing pre-anesthetic blood testing before any procedure. By performing blood testing, we can discover an underlying condition prior to surgery and make the necessary changes or cancel the surgery if undergoing anesthesia is unsafe for your pet. Our pre-anesthetic blood tests evaluate liver, kidney, and electrolyte values as well as red blood cells, white blood cells, and clotting agents. While these tests can be performed on the same day for younger patients, our veterinarian might recommend performing these tests before the day of the procedure for older patients.
