Platelet Rich Plasma (PCP) Therapy
At the Animal Clinic of North Topeka, our veterinarians are fortunate to be able to provide Platelet Rich Plasma therapy for your pet. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that has been proposed to treat inflammatory conditions that affect ligaments, muscles, joints, and tendons. This method can also help with bone regeneration after a bone fracture as well. By injecting PRP/ACP into the site of inflammation, this helps promote healing of the affected tissue and reduce inflammation.
What is PRP?
PRP/ACP is derived from removing the red blood cells from whole blood and isolating the platelets. A sample of blood is taken from the patient and centrifuged. This separates the blood into different components. The red blood cells are then discarded, which leaves platelets and proteins. These platelets and proteins are then injected back into the area of inflammation to promote healing.
How does it work? What are the side effects?
Platelets carry a substance called cytokines or growth factors. These growth factors help attract and activate other cells to repair injured and inflamed cells.
Since PRP/ACP are using the pets’ own blood the side effects are minimal! However, the procedure is done under sedation so consulting one of our veterinarians about your pets’ risk is recommended before scheduling. Some effects of the injection are pain, irritation, or bleeding at the injection site.
